Yep does a great job of capturing life and confusion in Hiroshima after the bomb dropped. I appreciate the subject matter of this book as we often gloss over how the horrors of war affected the citizens of American enemies. This is the second historical novella I’ve read by Lawrence Yep and I have to say he does an excellent job of researching his books and creating believable, sympathetic characters. ![]() As one of the twenty-five Hiroshima Maidens, Sachi later travels to the United States to undergo painful surgeries to repair her scars from the bomb. Sachi spends several years hiding indoors as people who move to Hiroshima are leery of the survivors due to their exposure to radiation. Sachi survives, but her sister is not so lucky. After passing out, she wakes to destruction and death all around her. Sachi is out looking through abandoned houses for useful items to save and reuse when the bomb is dropped. When the American bomber plane Enola Gay drops the atomic bomb, the city will suffer for years to come. The plane paces and everyone thinks they are safe, not realizing the plane was scouting the weather for the Enola Gay. ![]() When they hear a plan coming, the girls quickly put on their hoods in a futile attempt to shield themselves against harm. It follows a young girl named Sachi and her sister Riko as they go about their daily lives in the face of war. This book takes place in Hiroshima, focusing on August 6, 1945. ![]()
